As a safe technician, David is able to retrofit some safes.
The final decision i s up to the customer to invest money into an old safe or purchase a new one.
Most of the time, the reason for retrofitting an old safe may be one of necessity, and the cost factor may be less than buying a new safe.
An example would be a safe that is in the floor and cannot be removed easily. Retrofitting then may be less costly than cutting the concrete and replacing the safe. Even installing a new safe in the concrete without taking the old one out could be more costly than retrofitting.
The most important determination is if the safe can be retrofitted.
This particular safe is very old, and compact. The lock body was made in the 1950’s, the lock is not standard and parts are not being made.

The call came out as a safe that would not open. Upon further inspection, David determined the safe had a broken fly which kept the wheels from rotating and opening the safe. The dial states it is a S&G, however the lock body is a Mosler.
David drilled the Mosler lock and opened the safe, upon further inspection he determined the lock was worn and needed to be replaced.

David then determined what holes to weld close and which holes would be used for the new lock and relocker.

As you can see the spindle hole was moved and the holes were welded, then polished flat.

The new S&G 6730 lock installed into the safe head, the lock just fits into the housing. David tapped new holes, fabricated a new bolt assembly, used locktight on every screw, nut, bolt and modified the relocker to fit the new lock.

A hole was drilled into the back cover to faciliate
changing the combination without taking the cover off of the safe.

David used a small dial and ring, which helped the safe look proportional. The total time involved in retrofitting the safe was four to five hours, in return the customer has a in the floor safe that is professionally rebuilt, the safe is built to last many years and can be serviced with parts that are being made indefinitely.
